KGOC Zero Building aims to design the most energy and resource efficient building possible . The paramount goal is zero net annual external power consumption, which in turn equates to zero operating CO2 emissions. One of the fundamental goals of KGOC Zero is enhanced energy efficiency in effect, a building that runs on energy generated on-site.
From the outset it would be clear that additional costs would be required in order to achieve higher targets (LEED Platinum), but the design approach is aimed at first finding technical solutions and only then estimating the economic implications. The architectural concept is based on environmental considerations, in order to achieve the heighest possible quality for both indoor and outdoor spaces. In order to offer maximum shading and avoid the extreme hot summer conditions, the approach is simply to build upside down!
TELESCOPIC SECTION AND INVERTED ATRIUM/LIGHTWELL
An atrium/lightwell in the ‘low rise’ portion of Zero is to provide natural ventilation and daylight. Achieving the required average, for a working office space, daylight factor which should not be less than 3, taking into consideration to minimize the glare effect.Atriums as well are a strong reflection of the traditional arabic building tectonics Vertical organization ; a telescopic section is preferred to offer maximum shading in addition to in direct lighting Horizontal organization; the proposed system simulates +ve and -ve pressure which offers a good ventilation of air within different spaces and floors of the building
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PARAMETERS
The main working spaces are identified through two different spatial experiences. First, to gather all closed office spaces along the boundary of atriums, and secondllly to integrate all open office spaces together on the external facades. This strategy allows the indirect daylight to reach deeper distances within the buildings, and thus decrease.the energy consumption resulting from artificial lighting systems. A double facade “skin” extended over the entire south and west facades supporting Zero’s
.fundamental ventilation, day lighting and shading strategies. The external facade skin shall expand to the reach the most upper floor (plant floor) and integrate the P.V panels on the roof Circulation are not to be considered as corridors but rather as spaces. Even sky bridges which link the different buildings together on a horizontal level, will accommodate social gathering spaces Incorporation of internal circulation stairs to improve ventilation and amenity, and to provide alternatives to vertical transportation systems from the elevated ground floor to the upper levels.
